Subject: Are you OK?
Just a solid GOGD show, on a hot tour, played uptempo, for potential new fans, for when they came back in a year. There may be no spectacular moments per se, but it is solid throughout: confident, relaxed, with rock-n-roll intentions. Fourteen songs are repeats from the night before - a large amount for '72, and maybe because they didn't think there were many returnees yet in OK? This and the slightly better next show both set up for the monster on 11/18.
First Set. The mix is a mess on Bertha, making it a wash. After a quotidian Beat it on Down the Line-4 comes a strong Bird Song. A rather nice little journey, if on the mellow side. The rest of the set is a solid screamer; all are above average. The beginning of Big River is clipped by about 15secs. Sugaree is smooth, if sans fireworks, but check out Bobby's great counter-playing. El Paso is uptempo, delicate; Box of Rain spry, decent. The two-guitar interplay on Cumberland is fantastic. Around & Around is not the best of the triple Berries, but that won't matter after this China>Rider. There are a couple flaws, and the latter starts briskly only to keep losing tempo, but it's a flourished finish to a set of well-paced rock for newly-minted OKC Heads.
Second Set. Promised Land relaunches, but it's all gone a tad flat by Brokedown. A major undertaking of a Playing in the Band sends the peak section of the set into space. A must-hear-once. The official release has an edit of 26secs @11:25. A weird choice, since there's just a brief tape curl. A superb, full-on rockin' version of Big Railroad pours cement for a block-solid Bobby McGee. Jer's loopy solo is a unique take, and he keeps exploring in the verses. The rest is average '72 (or less) except for a terrific Goin' Down the Road. For the third Berry Jer plays with enough punch to leave 'em dazzled as they step up onto the bus.
1st Set: B
2nd Set: C+
Overall = 3½ stars
Highlights:
Bird Song - journey-ette
Cumberland Blues - check the interplay
Big Railroad Blues - full-on
Me & Bobby McGee - Jer gives extra
Goin' Down the Road Feeling Bad - choice example of a '72
SOURCES: Finally a complete source, the miller_110631, with the encore, plus one less gen on the 2nd set. The channels, however, are switched and it runs slightly fast starting at Playing, needing -1% pitch adjustment. Dave's #11 has Wharf, NFA>GDtRFB>NFA & an edited Playing, and needs the same -1% pitch, but does not have the channels switched.

After some mixing issue with Bertha, this board settles down very nicely indeed. Bobby is up in the mix (a feature of more than a few boards from the fall of 72) and nowhere is the impact more profound than on this incredible 30+ minute must-hear version of Playin'. There's more to the second set as well: Brokedown is beautiful, the versions of Big Railroad Blues and Bobby McGee are hot, and the Wharf Rat has a super pleasant outro jam.
But that's not all: the first set features a beautiful Bird Song, a great Candyman, a very well-sung Box of Rain (has Phil ever sounded more relaxed? maybe because he sang it the night before, too...), and a smoking Cumberland.
For whatever reason, the China->Rider seems a bit flat this night (another repeat from the previous day). The Sugar Mag as well is a bit "minimal" (Jerry kind of lurking in the background while Bobby and Donna pratice their duophonic singing) and the NFA>-GDTRFB->NFA doesn't take off like I might have hoped.
JBG is smokin hot, though. The professionals know how to finish strong.

Charlie--
Your name gives a thoroughly justified imprimatur of the highest audio quality.
The just sounds magnificent! Hell, I even like the ultra-high Bob at the start of Bertha -- he was never mixed high enough for my taste and he did such cool work.
To me, there can be no better use of your skills than a Fall of 72 Dead show: The pinnacle of their Himalayan body of work.
Many thanks to both you and Rob for all the totally prime music you guys turn us on to. This is some of the very best there is--period!
People-- when an idiot comments like one did here, remember the opposite of love is not hate, it is indifference.

Hi folks....Ive been listening to this show for a while now, and can honestly say its one of my favorites from 73 if not the era. The sound [thankyou Charlie Miller] is A1 and the setlist is a blockbuster!!! It has a very relaxed, yet tight & precise feel to it, as if they dont have to try too had to be amazing as ever...This show has all members bought up together nicely in the mix, Really wish I had been at this show, wasnt even born...lol...
Politics and idiots [particularly ones with mental health problems]... comes and go, some stick around for a while, but they always fall of the table eventually....one thing stays the same though.... an old friend once said to me, and these words still ring true for me today...... "Never wrestle with a pig in the dirt..... You both get covered in S**t.....but only the pig enjoys it"
Thankyou Archive for bringing all this beautiful music to us... Peace Love & Grateful Dead forever!!! (*);~))

Subject: And now…back to the music…
Charlie Miller strikes again on this one, which is a testament to what Jerry could do back in the pre-effects days with a beat-up Strat, some reverb, and a wah-wah pedal.
The raw energy in ’72 shows like this one rivals anything they ever did, in my opinion. The Playin’ on this night is a particular standout: a jazz groove at times that Miles would have stormed the stage to take over (thanks, Keith). Aside from the A+ rhythm section, we find (and hear perfectly thanks to Miller’s mix) a particularly inventive Bob Weir, whose guitar tone and delivery were never better thanks to the Gibson guitars he favored around ’72 – ’74.
I really think this is a prime example of the great ensemble they were from ’72 through ’74 with just Billy on drums. I ain’t knockin’ their other mold-breaking highpoints across ’69 – ’71 and ’76 – ’77…and various others sprinkled before and after…I just would’ve loved to see a night like this one. The freshness of Keith and the new frontiers that he helped open make ’72 a very distinct vintage…and one that yielded a new formula for infinite possibilities.

Close enough for me!
Beautiful Bird Song and Brokedown Palace. Awe-inspiring Playin'. Just about everything else is on par with the general excellence of '72. Charlie's work is, as always, top of the line.
Not to feed the troll, but it sounds like someone needs to get his wiener wet.

can't someone delete these stupid ranting posts? why is this garbage on here?
As for the show.......its two sets of the Dead at their best. These guys were ON. The vocals are stronger than usual. They're all singin' in tune with each other an really hittin' all their notes. There's 3 songs from American Beauty that are somewhat rare for 1972 (Candyman, Box Of Rain, Brokedown Palace). The quality of the recording is top-notch. A crystal clear Miller remaster.
Some standouts...
1st Set: Bird Song, Jack Straw, Candyman, Box Of Rain, Deal, Cumberland Blues, China Cat.
2nd Set: Brokedown Palace, half-hour Playin' In The Band, Bobby McGee, Wharf Rat, Sugar Mag.
classic Dead.

Are we in a political forum?
Name calling won't get anyone anywhere...
So..........
Streaming audio is great, but I'm trying to get a soft copy of this birthday show (eight years removed) to put on my iPod -- any suggestions?
And yes, I may have been too young to experience The Grateful Dead in-person but I don't think they would have liked all this "bad-speak".
cheers~

You want to banter about what you consider to be greater implications and politics surrounding a band you seem to know so well, do it somewhere else.
You obviously
1) have way too much free time on your hands
2) never saw a Grateful Dead show
3) don't get enough attention in the real world so need to shock people by writing obscene things on Dead archive blog walls....
wow what a loser.
Thank you Charlie Miller for an upgrade to a show that slipped through my fingers until I saw your remaster!
Some of us on the archive throughly appreciate the work that these sound guys are doing to these old shows. They do it out of they're own free time, for no money.
Don't clog up this page with your negative incoherent yammering. Your like the annoying guy standing next to me at set break trying to talk my ear off about this and that and all I want is to find an excuse to get away.
This show has awsome sound quality and playing quality. Some say that late 72' and 73' was the most primal Dead.
Nobody ever said (and if they did, they're misinformed) that the Dead organization was a model for morality or peace. In fact in some ways, many people learned from the mistakes of some of the groups less appealing ties. Altamont happened... its part of their history....
So, Islam Sucks. Go watch an Alex Jones DVD. And do us all a favor and stop clogging up this beloved source of information and music to so many with your negative energy.

Here we have a great show by one of the best bands who ever lived. In one of the bands greatest eras... and this poor guy is on some trip about politics, hating this and that, and god knows what else... Don't even bother to read that drivel..
Talk about your textbook case of a glass empty kind of guy.... Sir, all I can tell you is that I love you more than words can tell. ( and be GRATEFUL for what you have as the world is not as awful as you think. )
you can focus on how screwed up politics is...
or you can rejoice for how beautiful life is, what you are thankful for. I am thankful for MUSIC. I am thankful for Musicians pushing boundaries. I am thankful that this band evolved jazz music.... 31 minute playing in the band...
LET THERE BE SONGS TO FILL THE AIR.

any grateful dead show was a good one, even with people like the reviewer below; we all know our poor obomber 'o'bummer is a blow hard, but why you want to follow in his steps and wallow in hatred? maybe those doses you got were duds
man, it's about love, tolerance, respect
when you get thrown in jail for obeying the law and respecting the right of people to live without getting killed, it sure is helpful to have a religion to get you through the solitary isolation and torture- the very opposite of a dead show. if not a religion, some kind of joy to remember, or a prayer to keep your mind intact.
what's the point of being hateful? Uncle John says no time to hate, so you don't have to. we all suck.

5 stars for the PITB alone, and the rest of the show is no slouch either. Real nice Birdsong and a hot Cumberland, but they could have played this half hour PITB and walked off w/out playing anything else and it still would have been a 5-star show.
I never thought I'd find a PITB I like as much as 8/27/72, but this one comes really, really close.

You shouldnt give this show one star just because you got busted. Rate the show based on the performance, not on some childish grudge you have against this site.
The show is great, by the way

though I only have time to listen to a few of the songs tonight, it is hot. bird song is great...brokedown is one of my favorite and 31+ playin'. 8.27.72 is all time favorite... this has tons of energy. i need to invest in some real headphones because I can't use my subwoofer tonight or i would be cranking up some 72 loud. i give it 4.9972

WOW!! Listening to this psychopath below is almost
more entertaining than the music itself.

Why bother to waste the time to download the show and then blast the dead? 1972 was one of the very best dead years musically but you make it sound like pigpen was the whole band. I have not heard the show yet but even if it is not on par with Europe '72 stuff I am sure it is an amazing show--most '72 shows were.Life is too short so try not being so negative. After all the music is free-if you don't like it delete it from your hard drive-pretty simple.
